Featured Producer – Woodlets Briquettes

Picture
Woodlets Briquettes are the new hot thing
for your wood burning stove – so cut out the logs!

Woodlets Briquettes are good for your fireplace, your stove, your pocket – and the environment. They burn hotter, cleaner, are cheaper to buy and are much easier to store and handle than logs. In the UK today, change is underway as customers wake up to the benefits of briquettes. Once you have tried Woodlets Briquettes, you will never go back to burning logs. In short, you get more heat for your money.

Picture

Woodlets Briquettes produce more heat than logs and burn for longer. With moisture levels of less than 10% it makes complete sense to use them for wood burning stoves – they burn better and won’t cause chimney and flue problems. And they deliver around 50% more heat for each pound spent than logs.

With better burning properties than a traditional log, just one Woodlet Briquette will burn longer and at a much higher temperature. One briquette can last up to four hours.

Woodlets Briquettes for wood burning stoves is the obvious choice.

Picture

FUN FACTS

  • Woodlets Briquettes leave about 1% of their volume as ash – so no more emptying the stove every time you have a fire!
  • You can split Woodlets Briquettes by hand for smaller stoves
  • Woodlets Briquettes are accredited with Woodsure’s Ready to Burn logo and have a moisture content of well below 10%.
  • Much cleaner burning so you don’t get the tar problems associated with unseasoned firewood.
  • Woodlets Briquettes will expand if they get wet – so store them in a dry place.
  • Woodlets Briquettes burn at a very high temperature. Be careful not to exceed your stove’s heat capacity
Picture

How are Woodlets Briquettes made?

Woodlets Briquettes are made by applying 10,000psi (pounds per square inch) of pressure to woodchips. They are entirely natural – the lignin molecules in the wood melt under the pressure and bind the wood chip together to make the finished briquette.

Woodlets Briquettes are produced in Scotland from wood sourced within 60-miles of the factory where they are made. Even then, only wood that is left behind (the ‘lop and top’ if you like) is used to make the briquettes after the sawmills and timber merchants have taken away the best parts of the tree.

Remember, like wheat, barley and oats, these wood plantations are a crop – but on a 20-year rotation, not an annual one. These trees were only ever planted to be used in the timber industry – once they are harvested they are replanted.

Picture

Are they good for the environment?

There is currently a great deal of publicity regarding wood burners and wood burning stoves which begs the question are wood burning stoves good or bad for the environment?

A wood burning stove is regarded as a sustainable heating method – it uses renewable energy rather than fossil fuel. But how good they are for the environment depends on how old your stove is and what you put in them.

Wood is a renewable energy source, not a fossil fuel. Wood is plentiful and an excellent environmental choice, especially if it comes from sustainably resourced FSC® (Forestry Stewardship Council) managed UK forests.

Woodlets Briquettes have the stamp of approval from the UNESCO Biosphere in Galloway and Southern Ayrshire – the only globally recognised badge for sustainability and all of the forests where the wood is sourced are FSC® approved.

Picture

What about emissions?

Wood burning stoves produce fewer emissions if you use Woodlets Briquettes.

All forms of combustion produce emissions and the use of a wood burning stove is no exception. However, a correctly used and maintained, modern wood burning stove is a very low emission option – and especially if you use Woodlets Briquettes.

In May 2021, new legislation meant that ‘wet’ wood with a higher than 20% moisture content and pre-packaged house coal should not be sold or bought in England. Instead, homeowners have to buy wood that has a certificate stating that it contains less than 20% moisture and labelled with the Ready to Burn wood logo.

Woodlet Briquettes have the badge of approval from the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and carry the Ready to Burn logo.

There’s no denying that you can’t beat the warm and cosy ambience that a wood burning stove offers and they offer a cost-effective heating option – but make sure you know what you’re putting inside it!

The Good Zest Company

A Staffordshire based company, taking advantage of the demand for high quality hair & skincare
products made from organic ingredients  www.thegoodzestcompany.co.uk

The Organic Sector booms in the UK

The organic food and drink market is expected to grow by 13{650a267a6dfc0c56292df9f4411de9160c0ac02671db1e1ee03f984da437e88e} from 2022 to 2030 – an amazing projection considering the challenges facing us economically and politically. More impressive still, is the remarkable growth levels of over 15{650a267a6dfc0c56292df9f4411de9160c0ac02671db1e1ee03f984da437e88e} for the organic hair & skincare market in 2021 alone.
The UK’s organic hair & skin care market has reported its 11th consecutive year of growth (UK Soil Association Organic Beauty and Wellbeing Market Report) with the organic hair care segment topping the charts. Like the impressive rise in sales of organic hair & skin care products, farm shops are another ‘feel-good’ UK success story. As the high street has struggled, British farm shops have experienced a resurgence. This is also true for the UK organic hair and skincare industry.

Farm shops are a force to be reckoned with

As any business owner knows, to grow and thrive you must be able to identify the motivations of your customers and successfully predict new trends in order to adapt quickly. Never has this been truer than when looking at how farm shops continue to evolve by embracing new product categories whilst maintaining their unique point of difference from the high street – a total focus on supporting British producers, the assurance of better quality produce and broadening the choice of products available from butchery, deli and bakery to gifts, beauty and home.
Farm shops are uniquely placed to capitalise on the UK increase in sales of organic hair &  skincare because both industries share the same values of ‘quality ingredients’, ‘sustainability’ and ‘natural’ ethos. The Staffordshire based organic & waste-free hair & skincare brand ‘The Good Zest Company’ (www.thegoodzestcompany.co.uk) is leading the way with its award-winning range that has at its heart a staple product available at every self-respecting farm shop….the humble citrus fruit!  All of their zesty hair & skincare products are free from synthetic scents and are, instead, naturally fragranced with the uplifting and zingy aromas of either lemons, limes, grapefruits, oranges or mandarins.

“We are receiving more enquiries than ever from farm shops wanting to stock our organic, vegan and sustainable hair & skincare. this is fantastic and a natural partnership as we have many shared values around authenticity of ingredients and sustainability”

Rose Sergeant – Founder of ‘The Good Zest Company’.
The Good Zest Company is offering all readers of the FABULOUS FARM SHOPS’ blog the opportunity to stock its zingy hair & skincare products with the special introductory offer of 10{650a267a6dfc0c56292df9f4411de9160c0ac02671db1e1ee03f984da437e88e} off all orders over £100. Featured Producer – Rosemullion Distillery

Curling around the beautiful logo on every Rosemullion bottle are the evocative words ‘protectors and perfecters of the distillers’ craft’.
Here is a Cornish producer who lives by his art, one of a small number of distilleries in the area who create their base spirit from scratch, using bespoke, hand-built copper stills. Each bottle of Cornish gin or rum is truly artisan, made with a passionate focus on flavour, quality, and authenticity.
Since its birth in 2018, Rosemullion Distillery has been busy collecting awards and the list of accolades is both impressive and extensive:
2021 SIP California (11 medals)
2021 Spirits Business Rum & Cachaca (3 medals)
2020 Great British Food Awards (3 medals)
2020 World Rum (3 medals)
2020 SIP California (6 medals)
2020 San Francisco (6 medals)
Whether it’s the addition of Cornish rainwater to the fermentation and distillation processes, the inclusion of local seasonal fruit or the sprinkle of Cornish sunshine, these beautiful bottles filled with spirit are spreading joy around the world.
Reading through the reviews from the judges at these events, it’s hard not to want to wrap your hands around a glass of rum or bury your nose into a tumbler full of gin. Put your feet up, pop another log on the fire, refill your glass and enjoy these excerpts below;

Gold Rum

”The nose starts off with tropical pineapple, mango and slightly overripe generic tropical fruit. There is light floral notes and a lovely citrus lemon and lime aroma note. The rum also introduces some very light funky higher ester aromas and grapefruit. The rum is very pleasant on the palate with a warm and round mouthfeel. You get pineapple, mango and lime with a touch of grapefruit and citrus notes. There is a little bit of volatile alcohol, but it is quite pleasant, and it gives the rum some spice and heat. “

Seafarer’s Gin

”A beautiful and appetising combination between savoury and saline notes and sweet candied citrus supported by vegetal, green notes and spices. Great balance between sweeter fruity notes, warm alcohol and cooling, dry Juniper. The alcohol is beautifully integrated and it is a fantastically balanced and unique expression with plenty to offer. It has a long, complex maritime finish”

Spiced Rum

”A delicious spiced nose with a huge amount going on; clove, vanilla, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg the list goes on. The palate is warm and supple, just the right amount of sweetness and it’s really comforting. Those spices translate amazingly from the nose to the palate and balance out really nicely with the other components. A lovely rum that I’d happily drink anywhere. ”

Summer Gin

Ripe fruits and crispy vegetables on the nose supported by bold juniper and reminiscent of cacao beans. It is cool and refreshing on the palate with delicate fruity notes, maybe table grapes and citrus. Subtle , soft and refreshing on the finish, just lovely for the hot summer months
Although our language isn’t as lyrical as these judges, we at Fabulous Farm Shops were lucky enough to conduct our own review of some of these tipples back in 2020. You can read our thoughts here… Watch this space for further reviews as we have just received another box of Rosemullion’s latest goodies. Alternatively, get in touch with Rosemullion Distillery and see what you could stock on your own shelves!

Featured Producer – Chapman’s Seafoods

Want to stock a product with a proven sale record and an Eighteen month shelf Life ?
Chapman’s have been supplying independent retailers for over thirty years and whilst we understand the need to be constantly re-inventing products and their presentation to appeal to an ever changing customer driven marketplace, we like to think good old fashioned product quality and service will always be appreciated.
The Chapman family have been involved in the Seafish industry for several generations. Based in Grimsby in North-East Lincolnshire, our knowledge and experience is invaluable in all aspects of our business.
Central to the Chapman’s success story has been the late Mavis Chapman and her closely guarded recipes for her inspirational Fish Cakes. Like many Grimsby housewives she had her own special recipes for making traditional Fish Cakes from the fish that her husband Terry would bring from work. Mavis understood the principle of only ever using the finest ingredients and this is very much the cornerstone on which the Chapman business still operates.
Today her sons Kevin and Paul continue with this philosophy using some of Mavis’s very own recipes and some new ones developed and added along the way, that she would have being very proud of. We still have the pick of fish from local suppliers, and we aim to source our ingredients from local producers.
Chapmans continue to build on our heritage today and develop exciting and inspirational Fish and Seafood products. Having recently invested heavily in our kitchens and production facilities and obtained SALSA accreditation we none the less still retain the artisan practices that make our handmade products totally unique.
We now have a wide range of quality products to suit all customer groups, but our Fish Wellingtons are one of our best sellers. Chapman’s Wellingtons are sensational. Think portions of fish with mouth watering sauces encased in a light puff pastry. Truly Delicious! Your customers will love them. Perfect for impressing friends and family or just for a heart- warming meal. Our Fish Wellingtons are irresistible.
Simply place on a lightly greased baking tray and put into an oven pre-heated to 200°c (Gas mark 6) and cook for 30-35 minutes until pastry is crisp and fish cooked through. (In a non- fan assisted oven, cooking time may take longer).
All our products are delivered frozen and have shelf life’s of up to eighteen months making them a great product for farm shops. We take great care with our packaging as not only does it have to appeal to today’s ever demanding customer, but in Covid times we feel customers want to know each product is safely wrapped giving the highest levels of hygiene and protection.

Featured Producer – Blackthorn Salt

Picture
Picture

Look at this magnificent structure!
This incredible thorn tower is the first and only tower to be built in the UK and the only thorn tower in the WORLD to produce salt!

Blackthorn have revived the ancient Graduation Thorn Tower technique by gathering
seawater, then letting it trickle gently down and through a large wall of thorns packed with
bundles of blackthorn. These first stages rely only on the forces of nature; the sun, wind and sea.

Picture

Unlike any other salt, the Blackthorn Salt flavour profile retains a strong, confident saline echo of the sea,

Blackthorn salt has a certain depth and mellowness with a natural echo of the sea
natural

Blackthorn salt is unique!

chefs and restaurants – such as the Fife
Arms, Garry McLean and James Golding of The Pig Hotel Group as well as many others
– have already chosen to experiment with Blackthorn, using it to finish off a bespoke
cheese, incorporate into specialist charcutarie, add detailed taste notes to intracte
deserts and cocktails, allowing it to delve deep into the marbleing of aged beef and  for
floating on gaspacho as well as using Blackthorn as their overall finishing salt.

Everyday we look for more ways to lessen our environmental footprint and we are
proud that our Thorn Tower method evaporates 90% of the seawater – purely due to
the wind and sun working their magic – and uses 85% less energy than the usual
applied heating methods. When the concentration of the remaining liquid is salty
enough, we gently warm it in the panhouse to draw off the crystals by hand: it is a
patient process – all about making the best we can.

Picture

Blackthorn is proud to have brought salt making back home to the West Coast of
Scotland where it was once such a thriving local industry. Our methods and means
may be very different from our forebearers’, but we would like to think they would be
proud and amazed by everything that is Blackthorn Salt today. We also look the future
and are always striving to improve. We are particularly proud of our plastic-free wee
box: the perfect size for dipping your hand in, it also ensures that the precious salt is
kept dust free and stored attractively after opening. Our ethos is always to be the best
we can be, absolutely in terms of taste, but also crystal quality – that ‘crucial crunch
factor’ – and in our attitudes and methods.

Featured Producer – Corrymoor Socks

Corrymoor Farm is the home of Corrymoor Mohair socks. We have been breeding Angora goats and producing socks from mohair since 1992.
Since 1986 we have lived and farmed 128 acres in the beautiful Blackdown Hills AONB. As well as the lovely Angora goats which produce the mohair for Corrymoor Socks, we run a herd of beef cattle. The farm has been fully organic (Soil Association accredited) since 1990.
Known as the “diamond fibre”, mohair is renowned for its strength and durability, lustrous silky smooth fibres and unique wicking properties – the perfect natural material for socks.
The fibres of mohair are 3 times more resistant to abrasion than are the fibres of sheep’s wool and so socks made with mohair last longer and are much more difficult to wear out.
Mohair fibres are smooth and so don’t trap bacteria which cause smells and bad foot
health: no bacteria = no smell.

Corrymoor’s 150 goats are shorn twice a year and produce stunning silky mohair fleeces of between 2kg and 5kg at each shearing. The goats do their best to grow as much mohair as possible but as we sell around 20,000 socks a year, we do have to purchase mohair from other sources as well. The mohair used in the Corrymoor “Devon Stripes” range of socks is shorn entirely from our own flock.
All our socks are knitted for us on traditional
machinery in Leicestershire.

Corrymoor Socks enjoy a worldwide reputation for comfort and durability. We offer a
colourful, luxurious and hardwearing range of socks for men, women and children.

Whatever the activity, whatever the weather, the hardwearing and ‘no sweat, no smell’
properties of mohair are a massive selling point. From bedsocks to elastic-free socks; from trainer socks to long socks; from hard-wearing cushioned socks to lightweight everyday socks, we have socks for every walk of life.
Corrymoor has a huge loyal following and many of the farm shops we supply find that
people come back again and again for socks. Although Corrymoors are available from our website, for many people seeing and feeling what you buy is all important.

All trade customers are listed on our website with a direct website link.
