Reviewed Farm Shop – Tre, Pol & Pen

We’ve been out and about in
                    Cornwall
We had the pleasure of paying Tre, Pol & Pen Farm Shop a visit!
This fabulous farm shop is nestled in the Tamar Valley in Cornwall.
The site’s name derives from the Cornish saying, “By Tre, Pol & Pen Shall Ye Know All Cornishmen” with ‘Tre’ meaning farm or homestead, ‘Pol’ meaning pond or spring and ‘Pen’ meaning hilltop or headland.
On arrival at this beautiful location, the large and modern building had us intrigued and although it was a wet, grey and miserable day, we sure had a bright and sunny reception.
We immediately headed to the spotless and incredibly spacious restaurant to refuel…

Tre, Pol & Pen believe that the ‘best meals come about when friends, food and family meet’ and it’s pretty clear that this magnificent space with its huge glass windows and wonderful views, is such a meeting venue.
From the extensive menu, we chose the full English breakfast with great expectations and we weren’t disappointed!
Far from it!
Great care had obviously been given to the presentation of this delicious platter of sausage, bacon, eggs, sourdough bread, tomatoes and fresh local mushrooms.
A truly beautiful looking AND tasting, locally sourced breakfast.

We just had to try the homemade milkshake made with local ‘Cornish Moo’ milk.
Thick, creamy and very, VERY tasty. Of course this milk, along with all the items we had just devoured are all available within the farm shop.

The bottled and local ‘Cornish Moo’ milk is available in the farm shop with a return bottle and refund, policy.

Being in Cornwall the farm shop is stocked up with a fantastic range of local & Cornish produce & products.
There’s plenty of l
ocal artisan gifts, ranging from children’s wooden toys, to hand crafted jewellery, all presented beautifully with a little background information regarding each maker and producer, giving a truly local feel.

There is a well stocked butchery counter with a vast selection of meats from their very own Ruby Red herd.
Of course we didn’t go away empty handed, we took on some sirloin steak and cooked it as recommended by Tre. Pol & Pen’s knowledgeable, in-house butcher.
We recommend!
U
tterly delicious and extremely tender!

You’ll find a zero-waste, refill section, containing nuts, grains, cereals and pulses as well as household cleaning products, encouraging customers to reuse and refill.
There’s a fabulous play area for the little ones and dogs are welcome in the outside seating area and surrounding grounds.

Tre, Pol & Pen is an absolute gem of a farm shop and a definite ‘must visit’.
The building, its layout and its interior itself, are stunning, the produce is local, fresh & plentiful, the gifts are interesting & imaginative, the staff are helpful & knowledgeable, the breakfast, well…that was just plain delicious and now we have to ask ourselves,
is Tre, Pol & Pen the most Instagramable farm shop?

Reviewed Farm Shop – The Organic Farm Shop

We’ve been out and about in
         Gloucestershire…

Picture

Firstly, forget relying on Sat Nav, use Google Maps when trying to locate this farm shop BUT once you find The Organic Farm Shop, you sure are in for a treat.
This farm shop does what it says on the tin – EVERYTHING available here is organic.

Not only does the shop itself offer fresh organic produce, including over 100 (that’s no typo) vegetables, lamb, beef, pork, chicken, soft cheeses, milk & honey, you can stock up on alcohol, skincare, books, silver jewellery & textiles. You’ll find lots of Fairtrade and ethical gifts. I honestly think I could have spent a whole day here!
After browsing the shop, work up an appetite by walking along the well thought out farm trail, taking in the animals and the surrounding countryside.  If that sounds a little too strenuous, how about a trailer ride?

Picture

The child friendly café has an excellent choice of coffee, herb teas, healthy lunches & snacks, including vegan & vegetarian options throughout the week or you could enjoy a traditional roast available (from the farm) on Sundays.
The Sunday Times quoted this café is ‘laid back & rustic’.

The Organic Farm Shop is a MUST VISIT farm shop and although nestled in the peaceful countryside, there’s lots going on.
You can spend an eco/romantic weekend here in either the cottage, a yurt or the shepherd’s hut or you could camp in their Green Field ‘Leave No Trace’ family campsite?

There’s designated walks & trails, numerous workshops are also on offer, Deliciously Vegan or Gluten Free Cooking sound good to me… AND a fantastic, environmentally friendly, eco-venue available for conferences, team building and organic weddings!

Reviewed Farm Shop – Farleigh Road Farm Shop

Driving through Somerset en route to Bath on a very drizzly & miserable day,  I came by Farleigh Road Farm Shop. Well I couldn’t really miss it, it has very large signs letting you know it’s there and excellent directions on how to find it. This gets a big tick from me. It’s always a bonus when signs lead you straight to your destination.
So glad I dropped in too.  Though not a traditional working farm, Farleigh Road make every effort to stock locally produced goods wherever possible helping give local producers an outlet to sell their wonderful wares.
Within this farm shop expect to find a great range of award winning homemade cakes, ready meals, pies, fresh fruit and vegetables, local cheeses, gluten free & vegan products, jams and fresh fruit along with fresh bread & local milk.
Farleigh Road produce their very own sausages, burgers and pies which are showcased within their butchery counter along with bacon’s, gammon’s, chicken, seasonal game & some of the finest produce selected only from local farmers, ensuring full traceability.
If you stop for a spot of lunch in the award winning (& fully licensed) light & airy cafe you’ll be spoilt for choice!… a ridiculously appetising choice though!
There’s burgers, ploughman’s, breakfasts, dinners, gluten free dishes, stews, sandwiches, afternoon tea, soups, Sunday lunches, gluten & wheat free cakes and a children’s menu, all freshly made.
Seriously, even the pea & watercress soup has won awards!

Reviewed Farm Shop – Berry’s Farm Shop

Picture

We’ve been out and about in
                Lincolnshire…

Picture

Nestled in the middle of the village of Burton-le-Coggles in Lincolnshire is where you will find the award winning Berry’s Farm Shop, on part of the 8,000 acres of the Easton Estate.
It’s a fabulous addition to the incredibly popular Cholmeley Arms pub.
Owners Lesley and John Berry took over the pub in 2009 and after some research decided, in 2010, to convert the old coal house into a farm shop and they haven’t looked back!

This fabulous award winning farm shop might be small but it’s very well stocked with pretty much everything you need.
There’s fresh bread supplied by the local Bloomsbury bakery, local honey, eggs, homemade cakes and fresh fruit & veg. In the summer months there’s a fabulous selection of plants and flowers.
Berry’s Farm Shop also supply logs and offer a home delivery service too!
John Berry himself is Berry’s Farm in-house craftsman butcher and you’ll find an extensive range of pork (John’s own & highly recommended) along with his best selling sausages & burgers.
There’s game (when in season) and the lamb and venison are bred on the Easton Estate.
The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall visited in 2011 and were so impressed with the high quality of foods that HRH grabbed a pork pie to take with him!

Picture

The Cholmeley Arms pub offers a combination of superb food at a good price. With a children’s menu and a fabulous range of gluten free & vegetarian dishes. There’s something for every taste here, from soups and steaks to Ploughman’s & pasta dishes.  Not only is The Cholmeley Arms a popular resort for the local community but an ideal stopping off point for those travelling up and down the country & the perfect place to stop if you’re exploring the local area.
Booking is advisable as it can get very busy, especially towards the weekend. Dogs are allowed in designated areas and there’s also baby changing facilities.

The question is…do you visit the farm shop and THEN stop for lunch in the pub OR do you go for a delicious lunch and then pop into the farm shop for fresh supplies?
Decisions, decisions…
The icing on the cake is that The Cholmeley Arms also offers bed and breakfast. Within a separate barn conversion overlooking the gardens, you’ll find self contained modern, dog friendly, comfortable rooms with en-suite and a veranda overlooking the colourful garden. There’s also complimentary WiFi, Free-view TV & fridge etc. Add a terrific breakfast & this accommodation is absolutely perfect if you’re exploring the local area.

Reviewed Farm Shop – Manor Farm Shops & Garden Centre

Picture

What a super duper little farm shop…. Well, I say little (we couldn’t quite believe the size of this place once we began to roam around!) but Manor Farm Shop holds absolutely everything you could possibly expect to find in a farm shop and much, much more!

This isn’t just a farm shop of course, oh no…THIS Lincolnshire based farm shop has been supplying point-of-lay pullets since 1933 and still does to this day! In fact Manor Farm will happily advise and supply you with coops, huts, runs, feed, just about everything you will need to get started.

In 1964 Manor Farm added potatoes and then onions & eggs to their produce and the rest, as they say, is history. Manor Farm Shop is now in its 3rd AND 4th generation (is this the oldest family run farm shop I wonder?)

Within the farm shop itself you can find a fabulous range of fresh produce at very reasonable prices with flour from the local mill, Manor Farm’s own seasonal fruit & veg, local honey, cheeses, breads, cakes and free range eggs (obviously) incredibly selling approximately 250 dozen each week!
You would be hard pressed not to buy all your weekly shopping from this fabulous farm shop, the variety and freshness are second to none.

Manor Farm Shop boasts its very own resident butcher who provides high quality, locally produced beef, pork, lamb and chicken.  This award winning butcher also produces his own amazing flavoured sausages (we, of course, grabbed some prosecco sausages to review) a variety of hand made pies and great tasting burgers.

There’s an excellent range of healthy, vibrant plants & trees stocked in the garden centre nursery from the exotic to the everyday plants
You can purchase ready made hanging baskets throughout the summer months or even have yours made to order.
Claiming to have the largest range of bedding plants in Lincolnshire, Manor Farm’s nursery even supplies Interflora!

Manor Farm hosts an unusual collection of animals, many of which have been rescued.
Donkeys, sheep, goats, giant rabbits, guinea pigs and a fabulous duck filled pond!
And here’s something I’ve not come across before…Manor Farm offer bed & breakfast boarding for your pet guinea pig!
You can obtain ALL your animal needs and feeds in their pet store and all your heating needs (wood, coal, bottled gas etc) in the fuel store. A delivery service is also offered.

This little gem of a farm shop is a definite ‘must visit’, if only to buy those prosecco sausages!

Mon-Fri      8.30am – 6.00pm
Sat                8.30am – 5.00pm

Reviewed Farm Shop – Ploughman’s Farm Shop

Laid back off the A38 nr Axbridge, you’ll find The Ploughmans Farm Shop. Built only 7 yrs ago initially as an outlet for the lamb and turkeys from their own farm, along with a small variety of local produce.

Picture

Kaye (the farmers daughter) picked up the reins after studying for a completely different career and joined her family’s business as their talented master butcher.
Now, after many years of experience, Kaye produces the most incredible meat products, pies, freshly made quiches, meatballs, lasagnes, pasties & her infamous faggots.
Customers travel MILES for these faggots & bulk buy too…!

Ploughman’s Farm Shop pride themselves on the quality of their meat, even supplying their lamb to local butchers. You can pop in on a Friday or a Saturday and sample it yourself! Ploughman’s also offer freshly made sandwiches from a choice of cooked meats.

The farm shop has grown over the years and is packed with goodies including fresh fruit & vegetables, local bread, honey, Marshfield ice cream, Warrens Farm strawberries, Rose Farm chutneys & pickles and Carron Lodge cheeses, to name just a few.  Along with supporting local artists and producers, there’s also a great selection of gifts and a fab range of cards available.

Whilst visiting, I had the pleasure in sampling a slice of freshly baked apple and strawberry fruit pie!
Incredibly tasty! Pop by and pick one up for yourself.
You won’t be disappointed…
